All About Email and All About the Internet - Hands on classes

Connecting to the Internet

The newer laptops have wifi installed.  If you don’t need a card, it’s noted as such on the cover of the laptop.

For the laptops that need a card, the slot for the wifi card is on the side of the laptop.  There is a label on the cover of the laptop that says “Use Wifi card #”.  It is right above the slot.  The cards are in a small plastic container in the blue crate.

These cards are extremely fragile and must be handled gently.  They MUST be removed from the computer before it is packed away in the crate.  If the card is bumped into the side of the crate, it will break.  When you are done, put all the cards back into the plastic container that you found them in and put a rubber band around it.

This setup will take a few extra minutes, so please make sure you give yourself enough time to get all the laptops connected before class starts.  All cards have been tested and each computer will be able to connect to the access point and the Internet.  The only time you would have a problem is if the library’s wifi network is down.

If you are doing the email class, there are yahoo addresses you can use.  The addresses are stsi11@yahoo.com, stsi22@yahoo.com, stsi33@yahoo.com, stsi44@yahoo.com, stsi55@yahoo.com, stsi66@yahoo.com, stsi77@yahoo.com, stsi88@yahoo.com, stsi1010@yahoo.com, stsi1111@yahoo.com, stsi1212@yahoo.com, stsi1313@yahoo.com, stsi1414@yahoo.com  (note NOT stsi99). The password for all addresses is babylon.  Sometime before your class, send several emails to these addresses (you can copy and paste from above).  Send a few emails with files attached.

There are three different ways to connect to the wireless access point and the Internet, depending on the computer / wifi card you are trying to connect.  The steps for each way are in a document; click here to download.  In that document is a list of the computers, the card to use, and which method you’ll use to connect.  Please print the document and bring to class with you.

If you encounter a problem getting the computer connected, try using another way to connect.

At some places, they may have a secure network that requires a sign on – it you are going to do an email or internet class, call or email me a few days ahead of time so I can check if you’ll need a sign on / guest pass (plan ahead – not the same day, so I can get in touch with the programming person)

Print these instructions and bring them to class with you.  It is your responsibility to make sure that all laptops are connected to the Internet.  We cannot have a scenario where only a few laptops are being used, with 3, 4 people on each, because adequate time was not devoted to setting up the equipment properly.

It’s suggested that you start off the class by telling them that you are using the wifi network.  Explain that a wifi network is a lot like their cell phone network -- signals come and go.  Tell them that they may intrmittantly lose the signal, or they may see the computer slow down, and to just be patient.
