Screen Savers
March 21, 2004 Question: Turn Off the Screen Saver
When I stop using my computer, the screen saver goes on. It’s very annoying because I just turn away for a moment and the screen saver starts. I have to press a key or move the mouse to get my screen back. I would like to stop this – would you tell me how?
Answer: You can turn the screen saver off completely or you can increase the time it takes to start it up. Right click on the desktop. From the resulting menu, left click on Properties. Left click on the Screen Saver tab in the Properties dialog box.
In the Screen Saver drop down box, click the down arrow. At the top of the list you now see, click None. This will turn off the screen saver completely.
If you prefer instead to change the timing of the screen saver, increase the Wait time. Right below the Screen Saver drop down box, you will see numbers next to Wait. Increase the number by clicking the small up arrow next to the current number.
Click the OK button when you are done.

1. If you have pictures from a digital camera or scanner, save them in the My Pictures folder. 2. Right click on your desktop, and then click on Properties. 3. Click on the Screen Saver tab. 4. In the screen saver list, click on My Pictures Slideshow.
Now your screen saver will show pictures from your My Pictures folder.
You can load pictures fresh from your digital camera or scan in your old pictures, and have them displayed as a slideshow.

Today's Computer Term: Screen Savers
Screen Savers are programs that can run on your computer while you're away.
Screen Savers used to provide protections against monitor burn. Years ago, if an image remained in one place on the screen, it would cause burn, a white, ghostly appearance that would eventually make the monitor unusable.
With newer monitors, burn is no longer a problem. Now, Screen Savers are just for fun.
To select a screen saver, right-click on a blank spot on the desktop. From the resulting menu, select the Properties option. When the dialog box appears, click on the Screen Savers tab. Here you can select any screen saver currently on the system by clicking the small down arrow and picking the screen saver you want. Click the Preview button and you’ll be able to see what the screensaver will look like when it runs.
Screensavers can be fun initially, but might become annoying if they always come on. Make sure you allow enough idle time so that your screensaver isn’t always running.
When your screensaver is running and you want to get back to work, press a button on the keyboard or shake the mouse back and forth. That will turn off the screensaver program. |
