The following is the instructions to fix the America Online printing bug, as written by an America Online Customer Care Consultant:



I am writing to you in behalf of America Online.  I appreciate the opportunity to assist you regarding this AOL Technical issue.

I understand you are having difficulties highlighting parts of your e-mail messages while on AOL 7.0.

I sincerely apologize for the inconvenience that you have been experiencing. I really appreciate your patience with this matter and I am here to help you as quickly as possible.

Regarding your query, please try the following steps below that might resolve the problem.

May I also suggest that you please try to sign on after each completed procedures, and see if you still encounter the problem. Each of the resolutions may resolve the issue and sometimes you may no longer need to try them all.  If one solves the problem, then may I ask you to please stop from there.

A. DELETE THE MAIN.IND FILE
B. DELETE THE COMPVER.BIN FILE AND REPLACE THE MAIN.IDX FILE
C. PURGE ARTWORK
D. UNINSTALL ALL COPIES OF AOL, THEN REINSTALL AOL 7.0


A. DELETE THE MAIN.IND FILE
A damaged copy of the MAIN.IND may cause this issue. Please delete the MAIN.IND file.

TO DELETE THE MAIN.IND FILE, PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

1. Click on START, select FIND, then click on FILES OR FOLDERS.
2. In the Named box, type

MAIN.IND

Ensure the Look in box lists the local hard drive (usually C:), select Include subfolders, then click on FIND NOW.

NOTE: In Windows 2000/Me, click on Start, select Search, then click on For Files or Folders. Type in the Search for files or folders named box, then click on Search Now.

3. After the search completes, right-click on the MAIN.IND file under the Name column, then click on DELETE.
4. Click on YES to send the file to the Recycle Bin.

NOTE: If the search finds multiple copies of the file, please follow the steps above to delete all copies of the file.

5. Click on the X in the upper right corner to close the Find window.

NOTE: AOL will create a new, undamaged copy of the MAIN.IND file the next time you start the program.

B. DELETE THE COMPVER.BIN FILE AND REPLACE THE MAIN.IDX FILE
Damaged copies of the COMPVER.BIN and MAIN.IDX files may cause this issue. Please delete the COMPVER.BIN file and replace the MAIN.IDX file from the AOL backup folder.

DELETE THE COMPVER.BIN FILE AND REPLACE THE MAIN.IDX FILE, PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

NOTE: Please exit AOL. Click on File, then click on Exit.

1. Right-click on MY COMPUTER on the Desktop, then click on EXPLORE.
2. Double-click on the LOCAL HARD DRIVE, normally (C:). You can click on either side of the window.
3. Double-click on the PROGRAM FILES folder.
4. Double-click on the AMERICA ONLINE 7.0 folder. You can click on either side of the window.
5. On the right side, right-click on COMPVER.BIN, then click on DELETE.
6. Click on YES to send the file to the Recycle Bin.
7. On the left side, double-click on the BACKUP folder.
8. On the right side, right-click on MAIN or MAIN.IDX, then click on COPY.
9. On the left side, right-click on the IDB folder, then click on PASTE.
10. Click on YES to over-write the existing file.
11. Click on the X in the upper right corner to close the Exploring ... window.

NOTE: The next time you start AOL, the program will create a new, undamaged copy of the COMPVER.BIN file.

C. PURGE ARTWORK

1. On the AOL toolbar, click on SETTINGS, and then select PREFERENCES.
2. Click on FONT, TEXT & GRAPHICS.
3. Reduce the Maximum disk space to use for online art to 1 megabyte.
4. Click on SAVE and close the PREFERENCES window by clicking on the X in the upper-right corner.
5. Restart AOL and, following the steps above, reset the Maximum disk space to use for online art back up to 40 megabytes.

D. UNINSTALL ALL COPIES OF AOL, THEN REINSTALL AOL 7.0
Damaged software may cause this issue. Please uninstall all copies of AOL, then reinstall AOL 7.0.

NOTE: You may obtain a free copy of the AOL CD from many local retailers, including Circuit City, Barnes and Noble, Office Depot, and Office Max. Please call ahead and ask if they have an AOL CD available for you.

TO UNINSTALL ALL COPIES OF AOL THEN REINSTALL AOL 7.0, PLEASE FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

NOTE: Before beginning, please close all other programs, including other versions of AOL. Click on the Program on the Task Bar, than click on the X in the upper right corner of the program's window to close it.

1. Click on START, select SETTINGS, then click on CONTROL PANEL.
2. Double-click on ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.
3. Select America Online, then click on CHANGE OR REMOVE or ADD/REMOVE. Your computer will look for all versions of AOL.
4. Select all versions of AOL, then click on NEXT.

NOTE: If you do not wish to keep downloaded files or Filing Cabinet files for the versions of AOL you are uninstalling, uncheck those boxes before you click on Next.

5. Click on NEXT to uninstall AOL.
6. Click on SKIP.
7. Click on FINISH.
8. Click on OK to restart the computer.
9. After the computer restarts, place the AOL CD in the CD drive.

NOTE: If the installation starts automatically, skip to step 5 below. If the installation does not start automatically, or if you are installing from a download rather than the CD, follow all the steps below.

10. Click on START, select FIND, then click on FILES OR FOLDERS.
11. In the Named box, type

SETUP*.EXE

Ensure the Look in box lists the local hard drive, normally (C:), or the CD-ROM drive, normally (D:), select include subfolders, then click on FIND NOW.

NOTE: In Windows 2000/Me, click on Start, select Search, then click on For Files or Folders. Type in the Search for files or folders named box, then click on Search Now.

12. After the search completes, double-click on the SETUP file under the Name columne that has an AOL 7.0 icon (a white triangle on a blue background).
13. Click on CURRENT MEMBERS. AOL will search for other versions.
14. Select Adding your existing AOL account to this computer, then click on NEXT.
15. Click on NEXT. The installation will run, then AOL will start automatically.
16. On the Connecting to America Online window, click on NEXT. AOL will search for a way for you to connect.
17. Select Modem (telephone line connection), then click on NEXT.
18. Enter your Area Code in the Area Code box, then click on NEXT.
19. Select any Dialing Options that apply to you, then click on NEXT. AOL will sign on to retrieve access phone numbers for the area code.
20. Select the AOL Access Phone Numbers you want to use to connect to AOL, then click on NEXT.

NOTE: What constitutes a local call can vary widely by calling plan and phone company. For your protection, please check with your local phone company to ensure the AOL access numbers you select are local calls for your calling plan.

21. If necessary, edit the Access Numbers and the Codes to reach an outside line or turn off call waiting, then click on NEXT. AOL will sign on automatically.
22. Select You already have an AOL account you'd like to use, enter your Screen Name and Password, then click on NEXT. AOL will re-associate all your account information back to your computer.
