Cleaning Up the Hard Disk

Today's computers come with hard drives that have amazing amounts of disk space.  But no matter how big, new programs, caches, and temporary files can use up this free space pretty quickly and cause clutter on the drive and computer slowdowns.

While you’ll see many programs out on the market offering to help you free up hard disk space, for a fee, there are several built-in tools in Windows for doing a thorough job of cleaning up the hard drive.

Windows Disk Cleanup

Double-click My Computer, right-click the icon for your C: drive, and choose Properties. Then click the Disk Cleanup button.

After Windows calculates how much space will be freed up, it will show you a list of files types, along with the amount of space that can be freed up if you delete them.  Most of the files that you will see in here are unnecessary, only serve to clutter up your computer and can be safely removed.

Click on the category for an explanation, and check the ones you want deleted.

When all catagories to be deleted are checked, click the OK button.
